Benefits of Breastfeeding

One of the most important decisions a new mother will face is whether or not to breastfeed her newborn. Aside from the obvious benefits of breastfeeding being free and giving mothers and their babies an excellent way to bond, here are three benefits to choosing breastfeeding over formula, courtesy of Dr. Charisse Johnson at Premier Pediatrics in Granger, IN.

Most medical associations and organizations recommend that mother's exclusively breastfeed for at least the first six months of a child's life. The American Academy of Pediatrics also recommends that moms continue breastfeeding through at least the first year, even after the baby has started eating solid foods. The World Health Organization contends that there are significant benefits to breastfeeding through age 2.

1. Nutrition:

The number one reason all of these organizations recommend breastfeeding for such a significant amount of time is because breast milk has everything the baby needs to nourish it properly and it even changes in composition as the baby ages to continue to meet those nutritional needs. Right after a mother gives birth, her breasts produce a special type of milk called colostrum. It is low in sugar and high in protein and there is no formula equivalent for it. After these first few days, the mother's breasts will begin producing more milk to keep up with the babies' needs as they require more food.

2. Boosts Immunity and Lowers Health Risks:

Babies that are breastfed are at a much lower risk for many different conditions, including SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome), asthma, obesity, and type 1 diabetes. Babies who are breastfed also tend to suffer from less minor problems such as upset stomach and ear infections. Additionally, breast milk is full of antibodies that help boost the baby's immune system and protect them from getting sick easily. Colostrum, in particular, provides significant amounts of Immunoglobulin A (IgA) which helps prevent illness by helping form a protective layer in the digestive system, nose and throat of the baby. Breast milk also promotes healthy weights in babies.

3. Health Benefits for Mom:

Breastfeeding is extremely beneficial for women:

  • Breastfeeding burns calories and can help women lose weight
  • Breastfeeding helps the uterus contract back down to its normal size because it produces the hormone oxytocin
  • Studies have shown that women who breastfeed are less likely to experience postpartum depression
  • Breastfeeding puts women at lower risk for some cancers, type 2 diabetes, and heart disease
  • Breastfeeding may also delay ovulation and menstruation after childbirth
